Create: Above and Beyond Server Hosting
Create: Above and Beyond was made by simibubi, the author of Create itself, as a guided tour through everything the mod can do. It is small by modern standards and a good first modpack server. CABIN, a remaster by Pansmith, brings the same journey to Minecraft 1.20.1.
What CAB Is

CAB is built on Forge 1.16.5 with 136 mods, and none of them is marked as client only, so the server loads the full list. Its progression runs through chapters of the quest book, each unlocked by building a new kind of machine, and the late chapters reach Advanced Rocketry. Thermal Expansion, Tinkers' Construct, Applied Energistics 2 and Project Red join that same chain of recipes.
CABIN, short for Create Above and Beyond In Newer, keeps that route and rebuilds it on Forge 1.20.1 with 174 mods, with Ad Astra taking over for the trip to space. The two are listed separately and keep separate worlds; a CAB world does not carry over to CABIN.

How Much RAM a CAB Server Needs
Not much. With 136 mods on an older Minecraft version, our figure for a few friends is 5 GB, and CABIN needs about the same. The part that grows is Create itself: contraptions that move, trains, and belts full of items are all things the server calculates tick by tick, and a long production line of them is where a CAB world spends its time.
The table holds for both editions. A 1.16.5 server runs on Java 8 and CABIN on Java 17; the installer sets the right one, and the version page explains which Java each Minecraft version needs.
| Group | Memory | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 players | 5 GB | Starter (8 GB) |
| 4 to 8 players | 6 GB | Starter (8 GB) |
| 9 to 16 players | 8 GB | Standard (12 GB) |
Why Groups Start With CAB
Create is easy to watch and hard to master, and CAB is designed to teach it one step at a time. Every chapter asks for something you have not built before, so a group on a server tends to split the work: one player sets up ore processing, another the brass line, a third the logistics. That makes it a pleasant first modded server for friends who have only played vanilla.
Because the quest book gates recipes, CAB also plays differently from a kitchen sink pack. There is less to do at once and less for the server to run at once, which is part of why a small plan goes further here than with a pack three times the size.
Setting Up CAB on Our Panel
Back up what is there now
If the server already holds a world, make a backup on the Backups tab. The installer moves an old mods folder aside under a dated name instead of deleting it. A server on Paper or vanilla goes to Forge on the Settings tab first, because the Mods tab only shows on a server with a mod loader.
Search for CAB on the Mods tab
Type the name and pick the Create: Above and Beyond entry from CurseForge. CABIN is listed next to it as a separate pack, so check the name before you click.
Choose version 1.3, or the one your group runs
Take the exact version your players installed. Two releases can differ by a few mods, and a player whose list does not match the server's is turned away at the door.
Install it in one go
The machine fetches the pack itself and switches the server to Forge 36.2.20 for Minecraft 1.16.5 on Java 8. The server pack the makers put out carries the configs, so the server starts with the same settings your players have.
Start it and wait for Done
The first start loads 136 mods and builds the spawn area, which takes a few minutes. When the console prints Done, players join with the address from the panel.

Packs Close to CAB
Create Astral and Create: Arcane Engineering are two more packs built around Create, the first on Fabric and the second mixing it with Ars Nouveau magic on Forge. Our Create page covers running the mod on its own, and Craftoria is a Create pack with a great deal more beside it.
Questions About CAB Servers
CAB or CABIN, which should my server run?
CAB is the original on Forge 1.16.5, finished and stable. CABIN is a remaster on Forge 1.20.1 with newer versions of Create and the other mods. Pick CAB for the pack as it was made, and CABIN for the same route with current mods.
How much RAM does Create: Above and Beyond need?
Our numbers are 5, 6 and 8 GB, for up to three, up to eight and up to sixteen players. Large Create factories and trains push it up, so a group that builds sprawling lines should read one row down.
Does CAB need Java 8?
Yes. Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge 36 runs on Java 8, and our panel switches the server to it when you install the pack. CABIN on 1.20.1 uses Java 17, which the panel also sets for you.
Can I add mods to CAB?
You can, as long as each mod is built for Forge 1.16.5 and every player adds the ones that bring blocks or items. The quest book counts on the pack's own recipes, though, and a mod that changes them can leave a chapter unfinishable.
