Hosting for modpacks: what actually matters

Every host says it is the best for modpacks. Three things actually decide it: how much memory the plan has, how fast one core is, and whether the pack installs itself or you spend an evening on it. This page takes each in turn and names the size for the packs people actually run.

The three things that decide it

  • Memory first
  • One fast core
  • One-click install
  • Forge, Fabric, NeoForge
  • CurseForge and FTB

Memory first, because a heavy pack needs six to eight gigabytes before the first player joins. Every mod adds blocks, items, recipes and textures to what the server holds, and a pack with three hundred mods is holding all of them all the time. A four gigabyte plan runs a light pack for two people and nothing more.

One fast core second, because a modded tick does more work than a vanilla one. Machines, pipes, animated blocks and mob AI from a dozen mods all run inside the same fifty milliseconds, on one thread. Two slow cores are worse than one fast one here, and that is what the Performance line is for: the same memory with vCPU that are reserved for your server on an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, a full thread each on a faster machine.

A one-click installer third, because a pack installed by hand is a pack with the wrong Forge version, a missing client-only mod that crashes the server, or a config that does not match the client. Our catalogue installs CurseForge and FTB packs with the matching loader and version in one click, and switching packs is a second click.

What the popular packs need

These are the sizes a group of friends is comfortable on. A solo player can go one size down; a public server with twenty people goes one up.

Why a pack lags, and why it is rarely the hosting

A modded server that lags with memory half empty is a server whose tick is full. The usual culprits are a chunk loader keeping a factory awake in an empty corner of the map, a mob farm with thousands of entities, a quarry eating terrain, or a single mod scheduling work every tick. None of that improves with a bigger plan, and all of it shows up in a tick profile.

The AI performance check reads that profile on your own server and names the mod or the chunk. Fixing the cause is almost always cheaper than moving up a size, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the size.

Which size to take

Starter at 8 GB for a light or medium pack with a few friends. Standard at 12 GB for the heavy packs and for any pack with ten or more people. Premium at 24 GB for a public modded server. Pick the Performance line for the same size when the pack is Create, a big tech pack, or anything where the tick is already the bottleneck.

The three sizes modpacks land on

Each installs any CurseForge or FTB pack in one click with the matching loader, has a nightly backup included, and moves up a size without a reinstall.

Questions people ask about modpack hosting

How much RAM does a modpack server need?

Six to eight gigabytes for a heavy pack before anyone joins, then one gigabyte per one or two players. Twelve gigabytes is where most heavy packs are comfortable with a group.

Can I install any CurseForge or FTB pack?

Yes. The catalogue installs the pack with the matching Forge, Fabric or NeoForge version in one click, and a pack that is not in the catalogue can be uploaded as a server pack through the file manager.

Do my friends need the same pack installed?

Yes, the same pack and the same version, through the CurseForge or FTB launcher. The server refuses a client whose mod list does not match, which is a safety feature rather than a fault.

Can I switch packs later?

Yes. Take a backup, pick the new pack in the catalogue, and the server reinstalls with the new loader. The old world stays in the backup if you want it back.

Why does my modpack server lag with memory to spare?

Because the tick is full, not the memory. A chunk loader, a mob farm, a quarry or a mod scheduling work every tick fills the fifty milliseconds on one core. The AI performance check names the cause.
