Several worlds, several tick loops

Ultimate Performance is 48 GB and 12 vCPU, and it is the first size where the question stops being about one server. Three or four servers behind a lobby each run their own tick loop, and those loops do not take turns politely: they all want a core at the same moment, which is usually the moment an event starts.

Splitting memory across them is arithmetic. Splitting speed across them is not, and that is the part that decides whether the survival world stutters while the minigame server is busy.

What a network actually asks for

A lobby holds the most players and does the least work, a survival world does the most work with the fewest players, and a minigame server swings between the two every few minutes. They have almost nothing in common except that they are all single threaded, and they are all on this machine.

On 12 vCPU that works out to roughly one server per three cores with room left for the proxy and the backups, which is the layout most networks this size settle on anyway.

Worth saying plainly: at this size the difference per server behind the lobby is small, because you are dividing it by three or four.

Dividing forty eight gigabytes, and what does not divide

48 GB across four servers is twelve each, and that arithmetic is the easy part: you set it once and it holds. A lobby needs far less than twelve, a survival world can use more, and the split is something you decide rather than something that fights you.

Processor time does not work like that. Every server behind the lobby has its own tick loop asking for a core whenever it is busy, and busy is not evenly spread: the event starts, the lobby fills, the minigame server spins up and the survival world is still doing whatever it was doing. They collide.

12 vCPU on faster cores is what keeps that collision from being visible. It is also why a network feels different from one big server even when the total numbers look the same on paper.

Against Enterprise and Dedicated on the standard line

Two comparisons matter at this size. Plain Enterprise is EUR 67.99 a month on the twenty-four month term with 64 GB, cheaper than the EUR 85.39 here. Plain Dedicated is EUR 87.99 with 96 GB, which is close to this price with twice the memory.

If the plan is to keep adding servers behind the lobby, the standard line is the cheaper road and you should take it. Memory per euro is simply better there and it always will be, because it is the same machines we have always rented.

This is the road when the count of servers is settled and the complaint is how they behave when they are all busy at once. That is not a memory problem and no amount of gigabytes will answer it.
