FTB Presents Direwolf20 Server Hosting

FTB Presents Direwolf20 is the pack Direwolf20 plays in his long running video series, put together with Feed The Beast. There is no quest book and no set goal, only a broad choice of tech and magic mods to build with. The current edition runs on NeoForge 1.21.1, and the 1.12.2 edition is still one of the best known packs of its era.

FTB Presents Direwolf20 by Feed The Beast and Direwolf20: Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, 268 mods in the newest release.

The 1.21 edition has 268 mods, 14 of them for players only. Direwolf20's own mods run through it: Just Dire Things, LaserIO and the Building, Mining and Charging Gadgets. Around them sit Mekanism, Applied Energistics 2, Ender IO, Industrial Foregoing, Powah, Extreme Reactors, PneumaticCraft, Integrated Dynamics and Super Factory Manager, with Ars Nouveau and Occultism for magic and FramedBlocks and Handcrafted for building.

The 1.12.2 edition has 154 mods and the classics of its day: Thermal, Ender IO, Applied Energistics 2, Refined Storage, Botania, Blood Magic, Astral Sorcery, Draconic Evolution, Extra Utilities 2, XNet and Environmental Tech. The two are separate packs, and a server runs one of them.

How Much RAM a Direwolf20 Server Needs

Start at 6 GB for a few players, go to 8 GB once four to eight play, and to 11 GB for a larger crowd. With no quest line setting the pace, the load depends entirely on what your group builds, and a Direwolf20 base tends to grow sideways: one more machine, one more farm, one more wall of storage.

For the 1.21 edition, Feed The Beast publishes figures of its own, shown under the table. The 1.12.2 edition runs on Java 8, which the panel sets when it installs the pack.

1 to 3 players6 GBStarter (8 GB)
4 to 8 players8 GBStandard (12 GB)
9 to 16 players11 GBStandard (12 GB)

For FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21, the makers themselves put the minimum at 4 GB and recommend 6 GB.

Where Each Edition Comes From

The 1.21 edition is published through Feed The Beast's own app, and our installer takes it from Feed The Beast's catalogue, where every file is listed along with its configs, so the server starts with exactly the settings your players have. The 1.12.2 edition comes from CurseForge with a server pack of its own.

Players on the 1.21 edition install it through the FTB app, and players on 1.12.2 through the CurseForge app. Whatever they use, the version number has to match the server's.

Setting Up Direwolf20 on Our Panel

  1. Back up what is there now

If the server already holds a world, make a backup on the Backups tab. The installer moves an old mods folder aside under a dated name instead of deleting it. A server on Paper or vanilla goes to NeoForge on the Settings tab first, because the Mods tab only shows on a server with a mod loader.

  2. Search for Direwolf20 on the Mods tab

Type the name and pick the FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21 entry from Feed The Beast. FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.12 is listed next to it as a separate pack, so check the name before you click.

  3. Choose version 1.4.1, or the one your group runs

Take the exact version your players installed. Two releases can differ by a few mods, and a player whose list does not match the server's is turned away at the door.

  4. Install it in one go

The machine fetches the pack itself and switches the server to NeoForge 21.1.74 for Minecraft 1.21.1. Feed The Beast lists every config file along with the mods, so the server starts with the same settings your players have.

  5. Start it and wait for Done

The first start loads 254 mods and builds the spawn area, which takes a few minutes. When the console prints Done, players join with the address from the panel.

Questions About Direwolf20 Servers

Which Direwolf20 edition should my server run?

The 1.21 edition on NeoForge 1.21.1 if you want current mods and Direwolf20's newer series, and the 1.12.2 edition for the classic mods of that era. A server runs one, and every player uses the same edition and version.

How much RAM does a Direwolf20 server need?

A small group runs on 6 GB, four to eight players want 8 GB, and sixteen are comfortable with 11 GB. Feed The Beast itself names 4 GB as the minimum and 6 GB as recommended for the 1.21 edition, which fits a small group in a young world.

Does the Direwolf20 pack have quests?

No. It is a sandbox by design: the mods are there to build with, in whatever order your group likes. That makes it a relaxed server for players who know what they want to make.

Where do players get the 1.21 edition?

Through the FTB app, where Feed The Beast publishes it. The server gets it from the same catalogue through our installer, so both sides end up with identical files.
