When another region is the better answer
If a real share of your community is in southeast Asia, Singapore splits the difference. If most of your players are American with a few Australians, US West is the compromise. For a server that is simply Australian, nothing here beats Sydney.

Is Melbourne or Brisbane much worse than Sydney?
No. Both sit close enough that the difference against Sydney is small, and both are far better off here than on any overseas region.
Do console and mobile players benefit as much?
More, if anything. A console on a home connection has less margin than a computer on the same line, so the shorter distance shows up sooner.
